Trip Details

Embark on this pre-trip extension to immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Scarlet Macaws and seize the rare opportunity to photograph the normally shy anteaters and armadillos, alongside a variety of other Brazilian wildlife. We’ve pinpointed two exquisite locations in southern Brazil that offer exceptional photographic opportunities for these two species and more, allowing you to showcase these remarkable animals in their natural habitat. Join us for a fun adventure that will enhance your photography skills and strengthen your bond with the wonders of nature!

Scarlet Macaws and more in Flight!

Scarlet macaws are gorgeous birds and capturing their stunning colors in flight is even more incredible. Imagine photographing pairs of Scarlet Macaws as they fly below and before you with colorful outstretched wings, crossing an open cavern with a subtle background of tans and greens. Their colors, their calls – it all excites the mind and makes for incredible photographs.

During this trip, we will be taking you to one of the best places we know to photograph these birds. It is one of the largest sink holes in the world and is home to over 120 scarlet macaws – recognized as one of the largest concentrations of macaws in this world. Photographing birds in flight is always amazing but when you have Scarlet Macaws in front of your lens, it is that much more stunning.

While macaws are the stars of this location, over 160 other birds are also found here, including Toucans, vultures, parrots and many more.

In addition to flight photography, the macaws often come fairly close, perching on trees and branches around this unique habitat where you can capture stunning portraits of these beautiful and charismatic birds.

Anteaters, armadillos and more!

As we shift our focus from the vibrant flocks of macaws, we head to a cozy lodge renowned for its anteaters and armadillos. Although these mammals are usually quite shy, this lodge offers a unique advantage, as they are more approachable here. It is regarded as “the place” for anteaters, boasting a higher population that has remained undisturbed by hunting, providing us with incredible opportunities to capture unique images and engage with these fascinating creatures. Moreover, the lodge’s expansive and diverse habitat invites us to explore and photograph a variety of other captivating subjects along the way.

Strategically located lodges

The lodges that we stay at for this trip make the experience. In fact, these are small lodges and if they did not have availability, we would not be doing this trip. They are that unique. They provide us with both incredible opportunities to photograph as well as all the comfort of home. Staying in small lodges, you will have everything that you need for a wonderful stay while you fill up your memory cards and enjoy this special time.

Two Photography Instructors

Our tour is designed for photographers of all skill levels. You’ll have two instructors, Steve and Nicole, by your side throughout, to advise as you capture images of a lifetime.

Nature Lover’s Trip: While we cannot offer a discount on this trip due to our need to keep the group size small, this is a terrific trip for the non-photographer spouse/friend who loves spending time with wildlife. We actually have a number of non-photographers who love nature join our trips because we are not only fun to travel with but also spend time with wildlife, watching and enjoying the behaviors and activity.

Fitness Level: Easy. Some walking is required as we photograph the macaws and other birds around the sink hole.  The preserve has well maintained, flat walking trails and a viewing platform from which to shoot from. In addition, we will be photographing Anteaters, armadillos, and other wildlife around our lodge. Staying amid the action means you can take breaks as needed. When we have forays into the field, we will ride on 4×4 vehicles.

Tour Highlights
  • Two unusual opportunities – During this pre-trip, we’ll explore and photograph a wide variety of wildlife, but two key opportunities inspired this trip. First, you’ll experience Scarlet Macaws in flight around one of the world’s largest sink holes. Second, you’ll have the excellent chance to capture unique images of anteaters and armadillos that are not only more common here in general but also less shy of people.
  • Small group experience. Having a small group enables us to engage with wildlife mindfully and with minimal impact. This intimate setting helps animals feel at ease. As a result, we not only get stunning images but also share a truly special and memorable experience in nature.
  • Two Photography Instructors – Flight photography is definitely a skill and we want you to get great shots of the macaws! As always, you will have two instructors – Steve and Nicole – to assist you with your photography as you capture wildlife in this amazing place.
