The Greater Yellowstone Area has been called the Serengeti of North America. It is home to large herds of majestic grazing animals, as well as the predators that prey on them. When you add to that the raw scenic beauty drenched in fall color you have a truly epic adventure. Having been to Yellowstone dozens of times, this is without a doubt our favorite time. Most of the “tourists” have left and that leaves the park filled with rutting animals and wonderful opportunities for wildlife photographers. The animals are in their best coats and super active with rutting and breeding behavior. Having spent so much time in the park we know all of the hotspots for the best action!

For this trip you will fly in to Bozeman and drive to West Yellowstone as we kick off this adventure.

West Yellowstone will be our base for the first four days of our trip. From there we will transfer to our hotel in Gardiner for the remaining three nights. Using these two areas as our base enables us to reach our favorite places within the park and make the most of the conditions as we create amazing photos and enjoy the wildlife of the area.

As always, we will be happy to help you coordinate both roommates as well as rental car sharing wherever possible.

Day 1

Saturday, October 1 – Travel to West Yellowstone

Fly into Bozeman, Montana and drive to West Yellowstone. We will meet tonight for dinner and get ready for the days ahead!

Days 2 thru 4

Sunday, October 2 through Tuesday, October 4 – West Yellowstone

We will start our tour exploring the western and southern sections of Yellowstone that include iconic locations like Old Faithful, the Geyser Basins, Madison, the Hayden Valley, and West Thumb areas. One of the highlights of this area will be large herds of elk near (and hopefully in) the fog enshrouded Madison River. These large animals will be in rut this time of year and photographing their courtship behavior is something everyone should experience.

Days 5 thru 7

Wednesday, October 5 through Friday, October 7 – Gardiner/Northern Yellowstone

The Northern section of Yellowstone has its own unique flavor. With epic locations such as Lamar Valley, Mammoth Hot springs, and the bear infested Tower region, we will have a lot to photograph. This will also be our best opportunity to photograph Bighorn Sheep, pika and large herds of Elk in the sagebrush flats!

Day 8

Saturday, October 8 – Wrap up and Flights home

Depending on our flight times, we will squeeze in a final morning in the Park. Then, we will say farewell and head to the airport for flights home.

    EndOct 1st 2022
    Participants8 (Full)

One of the most iconic scenes of the west is that of Grand Teton Peak towering 13,000ft over the valley below and in fall, it is that much more spectacular. We are timing this extension for what is typically peak color for this area. Hear the bugling of Elk, absorb the vibrant yellow of Aspen trees. With moose, Great Grey Owls, coyotes, elk, pronghorn, bison, bears and other wildlife foraging through this area and migrating to their wintering grounds, we will take to you to our favorite places to capture the magic of this place!

The Lamar Valley, Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful, The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, each of these is a destination unto itself. Yellowstone is a very big place with a lot of different things to photograph. From all the amazing wildlife opportunities to the waterfalls, geothermal features, and of course the scenic beauty of the park, the subjects are limitless.

Having been to the area over a dozen times, this trip coincides with our absolute favorite time of the year to be here. At this time of year, most of the tourists have left the park, the cottonwood will be in full color, the valleys will be echoing with the call of majestic bull elk, and the bighorn sheep should be low enough on “Mount Kill-a-Photographer” to warrant a walk up to photograph them.
