Covering All the Hot Spots for Bird Photography in Colombia

We start our photo tour in the Andes highlands, dipping our toes in at a birding spot in the eastern mountain slopes near Bogota to photograph species such as the Blue-throated Starfrontlet, Glowing Puffleg, and White-bellied Woodstar over immaculate gardens.

From here, we take a short flight and our route drops into Cali and the Valle del Cauca region, with a famous cloud forest lodge, La Araucana, as our home base for the Km18 circuit. While our lodge itself offers ample opportunity for photography itself, we will take field trips to three exceptional bird photography locations with established fruit and nectar stations that bring the birds in to wonderful perches with clean backgrounds.

At one location, we will focus on birds such as the Multicolored Tanager, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, White-booted Racket-tail hummingbird. At another location you will enjoy filtered light and quiet blinds from which to photograph Chestnut Wood-Quail and Andean Emerald, and additional opportunities for the Multicolored Tanager among others.

Heading westward, we will visit the Andean slope at a highland location with a very active lek of Andean Cock-of-the-rock. As light builds, fruiting perches bring in Toucan Barbet, Velvet-purple Coronet and more. From here we head towards Manizales. We will make a special stop in a valley area known for its warm spark of Ruby-topaz Hummingbird and clean views of Rufous-tailed Hummingbird.

As we enter into Colombia’s coffee region, we will visit a local reserve where we can photograph Bar-crested Antshrike, Golden-collared Manakin, and Blue-lored Antbird.

From here, we go up in altitude to a protected natural area. Here, we will be in specially designed forest hides to photograph the Bicolored Antpitta, Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, and hopefully the Golden-headed Quetzal framed by moss.

Slightly higher in altitude, we will visit a hacienda that delivers a photographer’s double act—Equatorial Antpitta and Crescent-faced Antpitta— as well as the Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan that comes in to dedicated perches.

Our next location is a field trip to a glamping site, set up with gorgeous perches for Black-billed Mountain-Toucan and other birds including the Long-tailed Sylph and Collared Inca.

From there, we enter the high Andes and stay at a hot springs lodge: elevated decks and excellent bird photography situation. A few of the unique species here include the Great Sapphirewing, Golden-breasted Puffleg, and Rainbow-bearded Thornbill. Next, we will find ourselves out on the páramo in a high lake area Buffy Helmetcrest among sculptural frailejones, fine lines of Many-striped Canastero, and—the luckiest—an Andean Condor tracing the ridge. We then go onward to Manizales. Jardin provides a fitting finale to our trip. At a national park in a colorful mountain town, the Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek erupts in color at close distances. Nearby, we visit a forest reserve that provides rare daylight encounters with Oilbirds and lively river scenes featuring Torrent Ducks. Flocks of Red-bellied Grackles, with their unique endemic charm, wrap up out adventure.

Special Field Trips and Situations Designed for Nature Photographers

We have locked in the hot spots featuring tried-and-true lodges that are subject-rich and cater to working with photographers! We’ll shoot from the paramo and high elevation Andean hills to lower elevation habitats in forested areas.  You’ll shoot from bird blinds designed for photographers and enjoy a diversity of species and gorgeous backgrounds. You’ll get to capture action using our custom high-speed flash equipment and enjoy being in the midst of amazing wildlife. This trip is packed with unique opportunities designed specifically for nature photographers!

Detailed ITINERARY

Day 1

January 3, 2027

Arrive in Bogata, Colombia

Upon your arrival in Bogota, you will be transferred in a private vehicle to Hotel Habitel Select to rest and recover from the flight. Settle in, charge batteries, and prepare for tomorrow’s early start.

Day 2

January 4, 2027

Morning hummingbird photography and flight to Cali

This morning, we will depart from Hotel Habitel Select and visit a special location to photograph as many as 23 different species of hummingbirds that come to the feeders. Around midday we take our afternoon flight to Cali and transfer to La Araucana Lodge. After settling in, enjoy photography around our lodge with all of its feeders and gardens.

Day 3

January 5, 2027

Two exceptional bird photography field trips

Our first field trip takes us to a special location where we can do hummingbirds with our high-speeds flash set-up. In addition, it offers natural-light perches/hides for forest species. Target species include Multicolored Tanager, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, and White-booted Racket-tail, with understory chances for Little Tinamou and Chestnut Wood-Quail. By midday, we transfer to another location for lunch and a calm afternoon photographing birds in soft, filtered light. Here, we hope to encounter Scaled Antpitta, Andean Emerald, and Chestnut Wood-Quail.

Day 4

January 6, 2027

Morning bird photography field trip at a special hide

We will leave our lodge early to reach a special location with photographic hides and reflection pools that yield clean, low-angle images, especially of tanagers on perches and around feeders. We will also photograph at the forest patches where birds such as Little Tinamou, Grallaria guatimalensis, Orangebilled Nightingale-Thrush, and Ruddy Quail-Dove are found. When light softens, we rotate hides to work backgrounds and angles. Mid-afternoon, we will transfer back to our lodge to download, charge, and rest.

Days 5

January 7, 2027

Andean Cock-of-the-Rock Lek and More!

After breakfast, we will travel to our lodge, right at the base of Arenal volcano. We will spend 3 nights here. Enroute to the lodge we may encounter sloths and monkeys! Our uniquely situated lodge sits perched on a ridge that is less than 2 miles from the most active volcano in Costa Rica, the Arenal volcano. Enjoy breathtaking views of Arenal as well as seven wildlife packed miles of well-maintained hiking trails which are home to over 370 exotic species of birds, and an abundance of other varieties of wildlife and flowers to photograph. Because the grounds are so lush and filled with great trails and fruiting trees, we will spend a full day here working situations around the lodge.

Day 6

January 8, 2027

Photography enroute to Manizales

This morning, we will head toward Manizales with a strategic stop at a special park targeting the Ruby-topaz Hummingbird and Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. Expect warm, open light and clean, sunlit backgrounds. After the session, continue to Manizales for check-in at Tour next lodge. You will have the remainder of the day to rest or photograph around the lodge.

Day 7

January 9, 2027 - April 30, 2027

Full day photographing at our lodge

We will spend the entire day on site, starting at the Golden-collared Manakin via an easy trail and working discreet positions to capture wing-pops and short display flights. After the lek, we rotate through the use of the feeder stations, hides and shaded trails for behavior-rich subjects like Blue-lored Antbird and Bar-crested Antshrike in addition to tangers at fruit stations (e.g., Bayheaded Tanager). The compact layout and thoughtful setups around our lodge keep walking short and backgrounds clean, maximizing your time on glass.

Day 8

January 10, 2027

Antpittas and Other Forest Birds

After checking out from our hotel, we will drive to an amazing reserve for a full morning of natural light photography at renowned forest hides and mossy perches. Antpittas are a few of the woodland stars here: Bicolored Antpitta, Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, and Slate-crowned Antpitta. Along the trails and fruiting edges, we work marquee Andean subjects such as Golden-headed Quetzal, Green-and-black Fruiteater, White-capped Tanager, Masked Flowerpiercer, Northern Slaty Brushfinch, and Crimson-mantled Woodpecker. Mid-elevation hummers (Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Collared Inca, Speckled Hummingbird) and edge species like Chestnut-bellied Chat-Tyrant round out a varied portfolio without long walks—just patient, quiet positioning. By mid-/late afternoon, private transfer to our next lodge for check-in at the cabins, dinner and rest.

Day 9

January 11, 2027

Full day of photography from the comfort of our lodge

This morning, we will photograph at the lodge but will be hitting a lot of different subjects and situations: antpitta hides, toucan perches, and hummingbird spaces—all within short, easy walks. We begin quietly at the forest hides where we photograph Equatorial Antpitta and Crescent-faced Antpitta, working eye-level angles and mossy textures. As light builds, we shift to fruiting edges and dedicated perches for graphic subjects like Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan and Barred Fruiteater, then welcome in bird that include Hooded Mountain Tanager, Blue-backed Conebill, and Blue-capped Tanager. Midday and afternoon, birds such as the Yellow-bellied Chat-Tyrant, White-browed Spinetail, and Golden-fronted Redstart start coming in and the lodge’s hummingbird garden offers natural-light photography of Sword-billed Hummingbird and Shining Sunbeam.

Day 10

January 12, 2027

High-speed flash of hummingbirds and great perched bird situations

This morning, we will depart for a field trip at a famous location known for both its multitudes of hummingbirds and fruit eaters. We will have the opportunity to set up our high-speed flash system at this location targeting Tourmaline Sunangel, Long-tailed Sylph, Collared Inca, Buff-tailed Coronet, White-bellied Woodstar and Mountain Velvetbreast. In tandem to this, we will work the natural perches and fruit stations with clean backgrounds and controlled angles. Birds that we expect to encounter here include Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, Lacrimose Mountain Tanager, White-capped Tanager, Blue-capped Tanager, Black-collared Jay, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, and, with luck, Bicolored Antpitta along quiet edges.

Day 11

January 13, 2027

Morning photography around the lodge followed by a field trip to the Paramo

We will spend the morning photographing birds around our lodge where there are great decks, gardens feeders and short forest paths. Expect bold color from Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager and Golden-crowned Tanager, plus close portraits of high-Andean hummers such as Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Great Sapphirewing, Golden-breasted Puffleg, and Buff-winged Starfrontlet. Tawny Antpitta is possible around the trail edges. Late morning/early afternoon we move into the páramo and a National Park. Here we target the iconic Buffy Helmetcrest among sculptural frailejones, ground-level encounters of Stout-billed Cinclodes, and beautiful portraits of Many-striped Canastero. We will also scan the skies for Andean Condor riding thermals.

Day 12

January 14, 2027

Our second Andean Cock-of-the-Rock Lek

This morning, we will transfer to the colonial town of Jardín and have a chance to relax and explore the town before lunch. This afternoon, we will visit our second Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek. Other birds found at this location include the Blue-necked Tanager, Bayheaded Tanager, and the ever-present Colombian Chachalaca.

Day 13

15/01/2027

Field trip to a special reserve plus a river walk

We begin this morning with a field trip to a special reserve where feeders, gardens and fruiting trees bring Bay-headed Tanager, Southern Emerald-Toucanet, Green Jay, and the endemic Red-bellied Grackle into clean, workable light. As the day warms, we move quietly along shaded trails toward the river corridor and look for Oilbird in protected roosting areas, Torrent Duck holding in fast water, and Torrent Tyrannulet on slick boulders. Waterfalls and spray zones can also produce close, dramatic passes of Green-fronted Lancebill hummingbirds—perfect for natural-light backgrounds.

Day 14

January 16, 2027

This morning we will leave our lodge in Jardin and transfer to the Medelin airport for flights home.
