“Delicate Beauties” – Snow Crystals – These are single snowflakes. This was a project I did a few years back. It involved me basically building a microscope and figuring out the lighting etc. While I like these pictures it is something I would like to try again now that focus stacking is available.
“Coming at You” – Eastern-tailed Blue – This is an image that I had in my head for quite some time. But due to the limits of depth of field (zone of sharpness) it was never possible to realize my vision. Now that we can do focus stacking to allow more depth of field images like this are now possible.
“Dinner for One” – Jumping Spider with Prey – Jumping Spiders are certainly the spiders having the most personality in fact people keep them as pets!?! I love the iridescence in the fly’s eyes in this image. This entire image is about the size of a nickel!
“The Eyes Have It” – Spicebush Swallowtail Caterpillar – If you think about it a caterpillar is pretty much a completely defenseless ball of protein. So, they have come up with some unique adaptions to protect themselves. This caterpillar is a snake mimic, if you are a bird those big eyes might give you a bit of a pause.
“Free Ride” - Leaf-cutter Ants – These amazing creatures are surprisingly farmers. They gather leaf cuttings from throughout the jungle. They then bury these cuttings in the ground and use them as a substrate to farm feed a white fungus which is their primary food source.
“A Sip of Clover Nectar” – Monarch Butterfly – This Monarch spent the night on this bit of Clover and overnight the dew formed covering the butterfly with tiny jewels.
“The Mating Game” – Red-eyed Treefrogs – These frogs lay their eggs on the underside of a leaf overhanging a small body of water. Eventually the tadpoles develop in these eggs until they get strong enough to wriggle free of the egg, at which time they drop directly into the pond below.
“A Pretty Perch” – Buckeye on Sumac – one of the first trees to change color here in Michigan is the Sumac and its leaves become a brilliant red. I really Love how graphic this composition is.
“Sunrise Skipper” – Least Skipper and Sun – This was a surprisingly hard image to get right. Until you try to line something like this up you really have no idea just how fast the sun is moving. Just saying!
“My What a Long Nech You Have” – Long-necked Giraffe Weevil – Madagascar is home to many unusual things one of my favorites is this crazy Weevil. This is a male which has a longer neck. Incredibly this creature was undiscovered until 2008!
“Happy Birthday” – Mosquito – This was a fun project I did a few years back. Mosquitos begin as water born larvae. After a few weeks they rise to the surface and metamorphosis into a winged mosquito. They then hang out on the surface of the water for a bit to dry their wings.
“Two of a Kind” – Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs – These frogs are also known as Blue jeans frogs if you take a look at the frogs back legs you can no doubt see why. I Love the graphic nature of this composition.
“The Gathering” – Autumn Skimmers – One early Fall morning I arrived in the meadow to find literally dozens of these Dragonflies. Perched on virtually all the plants. I had never seen such a gathering. Research when I got home taught me that these Dragonflies often migrate in flocks!?!
“See Thru” – Glass Frog – You can get an idea from this image, but this frogs underbelly is transparent. Hence the name “glass frog” When you combine that with the direct eye contact and the coolest vine ever it makes for a fun image!
“Dewy Morning” – Eastern-tailed Blue – This dew-covered jewel is just a tiny guy about the size of your fingernail. Dewy mornings in the early Spring and late Summer are my favorite times to get out in the meadows near my home.
“Details” – Ebony Jewel-wing Damselfly – I love that macro photography can take you in close and show all those amazing details on some of the smaller things in the natural world. Mornings with heavy dew like this are the best!
“Up Close and Personal” – Green Darner – This portrait is a focus stack of 6 images. In a focus stack I take a series of images at different focus points and use a computer to make a single image with what would be impossible to achieve depth of field in a single image.`
