fall color in Michigan
“Autumn Splendor” - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI – I stood in front of this scene for hours waiting for a break in the wind. It was a cloudy day, and the image required a 4 second exposure. Which means I needed 4 seconds without wind blowing the leaves around, hence the long wait.
“Teton Splendor” – The Oxbow, Grand Teton National Park – I have stood at this spot dozens and dozens of times. I almost left on this rainy morning, but the sky was clearing and being an optimist, I stayed. About an hour and a half in to my wait, the clouds parted, and a shaft of sun came down and just lit up the trees, sometimes you just get lucky!
“First Light” – Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Michigan – This image was made just along the road in Seney. I Love the moodiness of this image and the way the bend in the waterway pulls the viewer into the image as well as drawing the eye to the rising sun.

“Fall Palette” - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan – Having these birch trunks to anchor this image with a good spectrum of Fall color behind. Seems like an easy thing to find but a seemingly simple composition like this can be surprisingly difficult.
“Water Sculpture” – Corkscrew Falls, Hocking Hills, OH – It will never cease to amaze me what water and time can do over time. This waterfall used to be on private land and difficult to access. Since I made this image the park service has purchased the land making it much more accessible.
“Giants” – Avenue of the Baobab, Madagascar – It is amazing to think that some of the trees here are over 2500 years old. To be able to walk amongst and photograph these giants is truly awe inspiring.
“Ancient Forest” – Cypress Trees, Caddo Lake, TX – If you have never had the chance to visit the Cypress Swamps, I highly recommend you make the trip. Paddling through this stunning flooded forest in a kayak is an amazing experience.
“Giants” – Avenue of the Baobab, Madagascar – It is amazing to think that some of the trees here are over 2500 years old. To be able to walk amongst and photograph these giants is truly awe inspiring.
“Colors of Spring” – Dwarf Lake Iris and Birch, PJ Hoffmaster State Park, MI – Spring wildflowers are a favorite subject. It is so nice to get deep into the Northwoods of Michigan and hear the birds sing and just spend some quite time with our subject.
“On a Winter’s Morn” – Yellowstone National Park, WY – Winter has such a magical feel about it especially on a cold misty morning like this. I love how the water pulls you into this scene.
“African Skies” - Massai Mara National Reserve, Kenya – We had spent the evening photographing a Mother Cheetah with two babies. On our way back to camp we were given another gift with this spectacular sunset.
“Tanzania Sunrise” – The Serengeti – Taken with a 600mm lens I nearly ruined my eyesight to get this image. When I pulled my eye away from the viewfinder, I swear my eyeball was smoking! Nowadays with mirrorless cameras this would be a much less dangerous image to make.
“Last Sip” – Buckhorn Butterfly – While not technically a landscape image this is a pattern shot which I feel fits in this gallery. This butterfly is getting a last bit of water or perhaps some minerals as this puddle dries in the summer sun.
