Nicole and I are excited to share the release of our brand-new free ebook, “Creating Silhouettes.” This project has been in the works for a while, and we’re thrilled to finally put it into your hands.
Silhouette photography is one of our favourite creative techniques — simple in concept, powerful in execution, and endlessly expressive. It’s also a skill that any photographer can learn with a little guidance and practice.
Photographing Silhouettes
In this ebook, we walk you through every step of the process. We cover how to identify subjects and situations that lend themselves to strong silhouettes, how to work with light direction and exposure, and how to meter correctly to achieve crisp, clean results.
We also include tips on refining your composition, avoiding common pitfalls, and processing your images so they retain the drama and simplicity that make silhouettes so compelling.
When it comes to photographing silhouettes, one of the biggest shifts is learning to see differently. Instead of focusing on detail, you begin to look for shape, outline, and gesture. Strong silhouettes rely on clean, recognisable forms and a clear separation between subject and background. That might be a bird on a branch, a distant animal on a ridge line, or even a simple landscape element framed against the sky.
Light is everything when photographing silhouettes. Early morning and late evening tend to offer the best opportunities, when the sun is low, and the contrast between subject and background is strongest. By exposing for the brightest part of the scene, you allow your subject to fall into shadow, creating that bold, graphic effect.
