Photo Tip: Cheetah Siblings & Visual Echoes

According to Google, the second definition for the word echo is:
A close parallel or repetition of an idea, feeling, style, or event.

Whenever possible, I like to incorporate what I call visual echoes into my work. Visual echoes are a simple but powerful way to add depth and interest to a photograph. They create connections within the frame and encourage the viewer to explore relationships between elements rather than focusing on a single subject alone.

In the included image, the main subject of the photograph is the relationship and similarities between the two cheetah faces. Since the face on the left is sharper, it becomes the primary anchor point in the image. The second, out-of-focus face becomes a supporting element. This balance between sharp and soft helps guide the viewer’s eye while keeping the image from feeling cluttered.

Our brains are naturally drawn to patterns and repetition. We find similarities visually interesting, and the comparison between the two faces pulls the viewer’s eye around the frame and holds their attention. Instead of quickly landing on one subject and moving on, the viewer is encouraged to slow down and explore the image more fully.

Quiet Visual Repetitions

Of course, visual echoes do not need to be this obvious. Sometimes the most effective echoes are subtle. For example, an image where the horizontal line of a group of elephants mirrors the horizon behind them, or a coastal scene where ripples in the sand visually echo the shapes of clouds in the sky. These quiet repetitions often go unnoticed at first glance, but they contribute greatly to the strength of the composition.

Being aware of visual echoes while you are in the field can elevate your photography. Rather than only looking for a single subject, start paying attention to how shapes, lines, textures, and gestures repeat throughout a scene. When used intentionally, visual echoes add layers, rhythm, and cohesion to your photographs.

Be on the lookout for them, and try to incorporate visual echoes into your work whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Good Luck and Good Light!
