When I made this image of a dancing Sage Grouse, I made a conscious decision to include a second, out-of-focus grouse in the frame. While it might seem like a small compositional choice, that secondary element plays an important role in strengthening the image.
Why I introduced a secondary element to this image
On a basic level, Sage Grouse are fairly round subjects, which can leave a lot of unused or empty space when placed alone in a rectangular frame. Including the second grouse helps balance the composition and visually fills that space, making the frame feel more intentional and complete.
More importantly, however, the secondary grouse adds context and story.
Sage Grouse don’t dance alone. They gather on communal leks, where multiple males compete for the attention of females through elaborate displays. By including a second bird, even softly out of focus, the image suggests that this moment is part of a much larger scene. The viewer immediately understands that this is a social, competitive environment rather than a solitary act.
Things to consider when introducing secondary elements
Secondary elements like this don’t need to dominate the frame. In fact, keeping them out of focus is often ideal. They support the main subject without distracting from it, adding depth and narrative while still allowing the primary subject to remain the clear focal point.
This is one of the reasons photo editors often respond well to images that include thoughtful secondary elements. These photographs help illustrate a broader story and provide context that a single isolated subject sometimes can’t convey on its own.
Wildlife photo composition tip: Look beyond your main subject
When composing wildlife images, it’s worth taking a moment to look beyond your main subject. Ask yourself whether there’s an opportunity to include an element that adds balance, depth, or story. When used intentionally, secondary elements can elevate an image from a simple portrait to a more compelling visual narrative.
