Photo of the Week: Wood Duck Pair

To be completely honest, I never really know how to feel about this image. Sometimes I look at it and really like it, feeling that it’s different and unique. Other times, I find myself thinking it’s a little gaudy — maybe even over the top. That internal back-and-forth is entirely driven by what’s happening in the background.

Wood Ducks in Full Shade

In this photograph, the pair of Wood Ducks is standing in full shade, while the background is made up of a reflection of fall foliage that’s in direct sunlight. The result is a dramatic contrast in both brightness and colour. The ducks are calm and understated, while the background is bold, vibrant, and demanding of attention.

And that’s where my indecision comes in.

Sometimes I feel that the brightness and saturation of the background compete too strongly with the main subject. My eye bounces back and forth, unsure of where it’s supposed to settle.

Other times, I feel that the image works as a complete whole — that the contrast between quiet subject and energetic background creates tension that makes the photograph more interesting.

Visual Hierarchy

This image has taught me something important about visual hierarchy. As photographers, we’re constantly making decisions about what we want the viewer to see first, second, and third. Light, colour, and contrast are powerful tools in directing that journey.

When those elements are in balance, the image feels effortless. When they’re not, the image can feel unsettled, though not always in a bad way.

Interpretation Matters

It has also reminded me that not every photograph needs a clean, definitive answer. Some images live in the grey area. They change over time, depending on mood, context, and even the day you look at them. What feels distracting one day might feel expressive the next.

Ultimately, this is one of those images where the viewer’s interpretation matters. All I can do is put the photograph out into the world and let it speak for itself — imperfections, tensions, and all.

Good Luck and Good Light!
