What is a snapshot?
A snapshot is an informal photograph taken quickly. Snapshots are not my intent. I am a photographer, and I want to make photographs.
Cameras, lenses, filters, flash, aperture, shutter speed — these are the tools of my trade. But tools alone don’t create meaningful images. What matters far more is how and why each tool is used.
I use these tools to bring the images I see in my head into the real world, making conscious decisions at every step to translate vision into a finished photograph.
Becoming a better photographer isn’t about owning more gear
To become a better photographer, you need to better understand the tools you already have. Invest the time to learn what each one does, how it influences the final image, and when to use it intentionally. That knowledge gives you control, and control is what separates snapshots from photographs.
Sometimes I choose a long lens to compress a scene, simplifying the background and stacking visual elements. Other times I’ll choose a slow shutter speed to introduce motion and convey energy. Or I may open the aperture wide to blur distractions and guide the viewer’s eye exactly where I want it to go.
Deliberate decision-making
None of these decisions are accidental. Making photographs is fundamentally about making choices.
Every time you press the shutter, you’re deciding what to include and what to leave out. You’re choosing how to use light, where to stand, and from what perspective the image will be made. You’re deciding whether the photograph will feel calm or dynamic, intimate or expansive.

How do YOU see the world?
When those choices are made deliberately, your images become clearer, stronger, and more personal. Photography stops being about reacting to what’s in front of you and becomes an act of communication, sharing how you see the world.
Make your choices with intention, and you won’t just take pictures, you’ll make photographs.
Good Luck and Good Light!
