Finally got some time to sit down and look through images from Africa, and this one immediately stood out as a favourite. I’m drawn to the sheer drama of the moment — a lioness working to separate a Cape buffalo calf from its mother in the Ngorongoro Crater. It’s an image that captures both tension and reality, a reminder that the wild operates by its own uncompromising rules.
Witnessing moments like this through the lens is both humbling and intense. There’s no script, no predictability, and no certainty of outcome. You’re watching instinct, experience, and survival unfold in real time. As a wildlife photographer, it’s an incredible privilege to be present for these life-and-death interactions — not because of the drama alone, but because they reveal the true complexity of natural systems.
Unpredictable African Wildlife
This is one of the things that makes Africa so extraordinary. On any given day, at any given moment, something profound can happen right in front of you. You might spend hours watching animals rest or move quietly through the landscape, and then suddenly, everything changes. The energy shifts, the stakes rise, and you’re reminded just how raw and real the natural world can be.
In this case, the story didn’t end the way the lioness hoped. The mother Cape buffalo stood her ground and successfully defended her calf, at least this round. That, too, is part of the story. Not every hunt is successful, and not every dramatic moment ends in a kill. Strength, awareness, and determination play just as big a role as speed and power.
Why I love returning to Africa
Images like this are why I keep returning to Africa. Beyond the iconic landscapes and incredible wildlife, it’s the unpredictability — the sense that anything can happen — that makes each day in the field feel fresh and alive.
I’m heading to Costa Rica shortly, another place that sits high on my list of favourite destinations. It’s a very different environment, but just as rich in opportunity, surprises, and unforgettable moments.
Good Luck and Good Light!
